Maria Montessori Doctor and Educator was born in Italy in 1870. She believed the senses were important to learning and development and created a range of equipment to enhance this.
Maria believed that education began at birth and that children are by nature eager learners. Her aim was to harness this natural ability to learn by presenting concrete experiences and materials to help children learn abstract principles.
She believed children learn
- Through movement particularly that of the hand which linked to the development of intelligence
- In an environment designed to meet their needs
- Learn best through the senses
To that end the classroom is designed to meet the needs of the children at periods when they are most interested and motivated.
